Digital to Physical: Navigating Your Custom CAD Design Process

When you invest in custom cabinetry you are not just buying storage, you are commissioning a piece of functional art tailored to your home. Here is how the drawing becomes the cabinet.

Computer-aided design drawing of custom cabinetry

When you decide to invest in custom cabinetry, you are not just buying storage. You are commissioning a piece of functional art tailored specifically to your home. Here is how we get from a conversation to a finished run of cabinets.

1. The vision and discovery phase

Every project begins with a conversation. Whether you are dreaming of a farmhouse kitchen, a sleek modern vanity or a floor-to-ceiling library, we start by understanding your needs, your aesthetic preferences and the unique dimensions of your space. During this phase we gather measurements and inspiration photos.

2. The digital blueprint

Once we have the specifics, our design team moves into the digital realm, translating 2D measurements into a detailed 3D environment. CAD lets us do more than draw lines. We can adjust the height of a toe kick, the depth of a drawer or the placement of a spice rack with a few clicks.

3. Visualization and refinement

One of the greatest benefits of the digital process is being able to show you exactly what your cabinets will look like before anything is cut. High-resolution renderings let you judge scale and proportion, functionality and aesthetics together. This is the measure twice, cut once philosophy applied to design.

4. The technical translation

Once you approve the digital design, the CAD file generates a cut list, a highly technical set of instructions that tells our craftsmen exactly how to break down raw materials.

5. The physical craft

While technology provides the precision, our craftsmen provide the soul. The cut list gets the material to the right size; the joinery, the sanding and the finish are all still done by hand.

6. Delivery and installation

Because we spent so much time in the digital phase making sure the measurements were perfect, the physical installation is efficient and precise, usually a day or two on site.
